Boise State Radio Launches HD Service and All That Jazz

BOISE – Boise State Radio is pleased to announce the launch of its new HD-2 service, which enables FM stations to broadcast additional programming digitally on a single frequency. The new service on KBSU-FM will allow Boise State Radio to bring back the jazz programming it carried prior to the July 2007 change to a news talk format. KBSU HD will now broadcast classical as well as Jazz music.

“We promised you that we would bring back Jazz 24/7,” said John Hess, Boise State Radio general manager. “With the introduction of HD 2, we have kept our word and have brought jazz back to our airwaves 24/7 on KBSU HD 2.”

HD technology allows AM stations to broadcast with FM-quality sound, and FM stations to broadcast with CD-quality sound. It is being called the most significant advancement in radio broadcasting since the introduction of FM stereo more than 50 years ago. Listeners will need to purchase an HD radio to receive the HD signal, but those who do not upgrade their equipment will still be able to listen to their favorite shows on Boise State Radio through analog signals.

HD radios can be purchased from Boise State Radio on the station’s Web site, radio.boisestate.edu. Just click on the “Shop and Support This Station” button.

Information on the Boise State Radio network, including KBSU-Arts and Cultural Programming, Idaho Jazz Station and NPR News 91, is available at radio.boisestate.edu

FAQS

What does HD Radio™ mean to me?
HD Radio™ is a groundbreaking new digital technology that produces the highest quality audio available, delivering crystal clear reception and offering CD-quality sound.

Q: What does "HD" stand for?

A: Originally, the initials stood for "hybrid-digital," because the digital signals were carried with the analog wave. According to iBiquity Digital Corporation, that's been changed, and the letters "HD" now don't stand for anything. Some articles and news stories have erroneously assumed that "HD" stands for "high definition," which has contributed to the confusion between HD Radio technology and High-definition TV.

Q: Will I need a new Radio to take advantage of HD radio?
A:
Yes, in order to take advantage of our HD stations you will need to purchase
a new HD receiver or stereo.

HD receivers & stereos can receive both Analog and digital AM & FM transmissions.

Q: How is HD Radio different than current FM and AM radio?

A: Because they're digital, HD Radio signals aren't subject to atmospheric interference the way current FM and AM signals are. Background crackle and hiss are eliminated. The effect is similar to the difference between CDs and records. The digital CD signal is free of the surface noise that's always present on LP playback.

Q: What is multicasting?

A: An HD Radio signal can be subdivided to send out two or more different kinds of programming simultaneously. When a station does this, it is multicasting.

Q: What is HD2?
A: HD2 is the term multicasting stations are using for their secondary digital-only channel. Some stations are using this second channel to offer more specialized programming, such as Latin Hits, Classical Opera, and Electronica.

Q:Where can I purchase a digital radio? And when?
A: HD Radio™ receivers are now on the market. Kenwood, JVC and Panasonic are among a few of the major manufacturers with car units. A number of automobile manufacturers are expected to offer HD Radio™ option upgrades in select 2008 model cars, and most 2008 models of Ford and BMW will come equipped with HD Radios™.

Q: Are home receivers available?
A:Yes. Home receivers are currently available. Visit the NPR Shop and type in keywords "HD Radio"
